  1. How can I join my class via Zoom?
  • Use the join URL sent in an e-mail from Zoom OR
  • Log in to your Blackboard, click on your class, on the left column, click “Join class via Zoom”.
  • You will be redirected to a new window with Zoom meeting. If this is the first time you are using Zoom, you will be asked to install Zoom to your computer/laptop. Choose to install.
  • Zoom does frequent updates. You can use this link to check for an updated version prior to logging into your class at least once a month. https://zoom.us/download2

 

  1. How do I setup the camera and mic?
  • After opening Zoom meeting, you will be directed to a window to join. Before joining, make sure you test your mic, speaker and camera.
  • Choose the right speaker output and mic input. Don’t choose automatically adjust because you want to be able to proactively control your volume.
  • Then go on Video tab to check the camera. Make sure you choose the right camera, and uncheck the mirror effect.
  • Exit the settings and click on join the audio.
  • After joining, there will be multiple video windows showing classroom participants and your professor.
  • Make sure you switch ON your video. On the bottom left corner there will be two tabs – Mic icon and Camera icon – that is where you control if your mic or video are on. You only need to unmute the audio when you wish to talk.
  • Use microphone and earphones or headset with microphone (Do NOT use open computer speakers or audio echo will occur during the class).
  • You can check your audio and video settings at any time by clicking the pop-up menu next to the microphone icon and camera icon in the toolbar in the bottom of the Zoom window. By choosing Video settings or Audio Options, you can test your camera/ mic & speakers.

 

  1. How do I ask a question during the class?
  • Please follow these steps –
    • Go to the “Participants” tab in the bottom of the Zoom window.
    • In the bottom of the tab column you will see various options that you can use. Out of these, select the “Raise Hand” option to let the TA know that you wish to speak.
    • The TA will let the professor know that you wish to speak.
    • Then you can use the “Mute/Unmute” option in the bottom left corner of the Zoom window to unmute yourself and speak.

 

  1. My microphone is not working, how do I fix it?
  • Please make sure you are using headphones for the best experience. If you have a trouble with the microphone, please follow these steps –
    • Click the small upward arrow in the bottom left corner of the zoom window and make sure the correct microphone is selected under “Select a Microphone”.
    • If the problem persists, please click on “Audio Settings” option in the bottom of this list and slide the volume control to max.

 

  1. My camera is not working, how do I fix it?
  • Firstly, please make sure that there is no red cross on the “Start Video” option in the bottom left corner of the zoom window. If there is a red cross, just click on it. This should start your video.

If that is not the problem, please follow these steps –

  • Click the small upward arrow in the bottom left corner of the zoom window and click on “Audio Settings” option in the bottom of this list.
  • Click on the option “Video” from the list on the left side of the page.
  • Please make sure that correct camera is selected on the video settings page.

 

  1. How can I enlarge professor’s/speaker’s video (side by side mode)?
  • Please follow these steps to find the view convenient for you –
    • Click on the “View Options” tab at the top of the zoom window and select “Side-by-Side Mode”. This should show the material being presented on the left side of the screen and participant videos on the remaining part of the screen.
    • When you mouse over the gap between the presented material and the participant videos a vertical grey line appears. Click on the line and move it left or right to adjust the view most suitable for you.
    • If you see all the participant videos and wish to view only the person who is speaking (Professor, remote speaker etc.), mouse over the top right corner of the zoom window. Click on the “Speaker View” tab that appears.
    • If you see only the speaker video and wish to see all the participant videos, follow the instructions in step (iii) and click on a “Grid” symbol that appears (a small square divided into 9 smaller squares).

 

  1. I keep getting kicked out of the class, what is the reason?
  • The reason for you getting kicked out of the class is poor internet connection. If this happens please find a place with better connection.

 

  1. If I am not available to attend the live class is there a recording that I can watch?
  • The recording will be available on the Blackboard account for that course. Please follow these steps –
    • On the blackboard go to the tab “Class Recordings” on the left side of the page.
    • Find the recording you want to look at based on the dates mentioned in the recording names.

 

  1. Do I have to be on campus to take an exam?
  • No, being a student in a Hybrid course, you have the option to take an exam remotely. If the exam is closed book you will have to find a proctor and a place where you can take the exam. Please let the professor know at least two weeks before the exam and fill a proctor form that will be posted on blackboard.
